Guest Talk: Strong Women: Beautiful Anger..., with Mary Lee Grisanti & John Broughton, Monday, 2/26, 6-8pm
Topic: Strong Women: Beautiful Anger in Literary and Cinematic Narrative
Please join us for a special meeting of the Film and Research Academy -- an account and discussion of leading female characters in literature and film who figure as "strong" women -- with all the complications that word entails.
The session will be held on Monday, February 26th in 306 Russell 6 o'clock in the evening. The main presentation will be by Mary Lee Grisanti, with a response by John Broughton.
Mary Lee Grisanti is a screenwriter, playwright, and novelist. Her works include Rare Earth (Doubleday), Mornings in Heaven, Promise in the Wind (Simon and Schuster); LifeForce: A Holocaust Love Story (New England Drama Best Production; Edinburgh Fringe Festival); Rare Earth (Columbia); Maria’s Diary – 40 episodes (Focus Features International); The Sesame Street Guide to Understanding Discipline; and Stone Soup: A Teacher’s Guide to Early Childhood Literacy(Children’s’ Television Workshop). Ms Grisanti holds a BA from Smith College and an MA from New York University, and she is currently a doctoral candidate in Cultural/Interdisiplinary Studies at Teachers College. She is interim chair of the Film and Animation faculty at the School of Visual Arts, New York University.
John Broughton is Associate Professor of Psychology and Education at Teachers College. Dr. Broughton's research interests include: trauma/PTSD, media and popular culture as informal education, youth cultures and subcultures, film theory, gender and transgender, and military technologies. Among his publications are Cultural Studies, Education, and Youth: Beyond Schools (Lexington Books, 2011); Critical Theories of Psychological Development (Plenum Press, 1987); and The Cognitive Developmental Psychology of James Mark Baldwin (Ablex, 1982). He holds a BA and MA from the University of Cambridge and a Ph'D from Harvard University.
