The NYC Health Department and the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Community Engagement Group (SRJ CEG) developed the NYC Standards for Respectful Care at Birth (NYC Standards) for pregnant and postpartum individuals and the providers who serve them. The NYC Standards were created through a community-based participatory process that began in 2016 and will culminate in its release during the 2018 SRJ Week of Action.
The NYC Standards encourage people giving birth in NYC to know their human rights and be active decision-makers in their birthing experiences. The NYC Standards also seek to help medical providers respect and be aware of their patients’ human rights during pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
